Pre-School Field Worker

Who is the Pre-School Field Worker?

The Pre-School Field Worker is qualified in Early Childhood Education and is experienced in working in Early Childhood Centres.
The Pre-School Field Worker is skilled and experienced in working with children with additional needs and with their families.

The Role of the Pre-School Field Worker

The Pre-School Field Worker:

  • Works closely with Early Childhood Staff and families to include children with additional needs in State funded pre-school groups.
  • Spends times with children at pre-school and at home observing and assessing their strengths and needs.
  • Assists Early Childhood Staff to plan and develop positive learning experiences for individual children.
  • Provides support and information for families of children with additional needs.

What are Additional Needs?

Children with additional needs include:

  • Children with delayed development.
  • Children with a disability.
  • Children with social and/or emotional difficulties.
  • Children with challenging behaviours.

The Pre-School Field Worker as a Resource Person

The Pre-School Field Worker:

  • Provides information to Early Childhood Staff and families about community and specialist services.
  • Consults with and advises other professionals and community groups about understanding children's development.
  • Works with Early Childhood Staff as part of a team with families in transition to pre-school groups and school.
  • Co-ordinates planning and support meetings with families, Early Childhood Staff and specialist involved in working with children with additional needs.

The Pre-School Field Worker Service


The Pre-School Field Workers are employed by St Luke's and are based in Bendigo and Kyneton and Echuca.
St Luke's is responsible for the provision of specialist support in state funded pre-school groups for children with additional needs and their families in the City of Greater Bendigo and the Shires of Loddon, Campaspe, Mt. Alexander, Macedon Ranges and Central Goldfields.
