4.5 Outreach and Case Conferencing
Outreach and Case Conference roles may be required in Child FIRST to:
  • Assess appropriateness of referral
  • Ascertain family willingness to work with Family Services
  • As an urgent crisis response pending decision to accept for Family Service allocation
Depending on available capacity, these roles may be undertaken by:
  • Child FIRST Intake staff
  • Local Family Services agency, particularly when service has had a prior relationship with family (case remains registered on Child FIRST IRIS)
  • Allocated to local agency for post Child FIRST role, when it is likely that engagement will proceed
There is a preference of Child FIRST workers to undertake this role when there are significant concerns for immediate safety of children and it is unclear whether the family will engage with services
Capacity to undertake these roles in Child FIRST is to be negotiated with Team Leader/Service Manager.
It is important to note that the best practice principles relating to family inclusion in case conferences should be followed. Families should be included in, and/or informed about, all case conferences held that relate to them.
Where Child FIRST arranges a case conference, families will be included  unless the family requests not to attend or where inclusion or knowledge of a case conference may lead to increased risks to safety of children.
