St Lukes Anglicare Environmental Sustainability Group -
"The Green Group"
St Luke’s is committed to reducing its carbon footprint by 30% by 2010.
St Luke’s Green Group is committed to supporting St Luke’s staff to implement best practice strategies in environmental responsibility in order to minimise energy, water and resource usage.
We have developed the St Luke’s Anglicare Ecological Sustainability Plan to demonstrate that St. Luke’s can take the ecologically sustainable path and save money. All Green Group committee members are involved in the use of this Plan to re-focus on learning & education and to develop key communications to staff.
Under this plan, the St Luke’s journey has three stages, namely Begin with a Bang (year 1), Embed the Change (2020) and Re-Imagining (2030).
Begin with a Bang (Year 1)
In year one, St. Luke’s will reduce energy use by 20%, buy 20% accredited Green Power and save expense, a sum that will be saved each year into the future.
Four actions to reduce the power bill by 20% and save $12,500 per annum:
1. A switch off campaign (save 5% of bill)
2. Lighting (save 3% of bill)
3. Set a temperature, dress and blower heater code (save 8% of bill) – At least 30% of the
energy bill at St. Luke’s is for heating and cooling. We need to create an office that is
comfortable to work in for the vast majority of staff and uses much less electricity. Blower
heaters make up a further 10% of the organisations energy bill.
4. Urns (save 4% of bill) – Replace with HydroTaps or install weekly timers.
Fact: Leaving your computer and monitor on during out of office hours can produce as much greenhouse pollution annually as driving your car from Melbourne to Perth.

There are various other strategies underway that involve such things as a proposal to introduce electric bikes into the fleet; personal heaters for ‘cold’ areas which are low emission and low energy use; introducing a 5 star purchasing policy; removal of coca cola machines and the like and phasing out bottled water and using the refrigerators already in place; fitting timers to hot water urns and tapping into expertise elsewhere that have instigated a “paperless” office.
