Aboriginal and Torres Strait Statement
Policy Statement
St Luke’s seeks to work in partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities: to work for hope, to build on strengths, to work together for justice and to work towards reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.
St Luke’s acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the original custodians of this country. We seek to pay respect and acknowledge this to the elders and clans in the various communities in which we work.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders continue to experience areas of significant disadvantage and St Luke’s acknowledges that in the past services have not always worked in a collaborative way with indigenous communities. St Luke’s believes that Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders should determine the most appropriate form of services for their own communities. St Luke’s commits to ensuring indigenous peoples are consulted about the delivery of St Luke’s services to their communities through:
• Listening
• Joint policy development
• Development of agreements
• Cross cultural awareness training for St Luke’s staff
• Joint staff training opportunities
• Seeking feedback
• Developing innovative joint strategies to address concerns, issues and community needs.
